Buying Guides on The Best Nitro Cold Brew Coffee Maker

In this section, we will go through everything you need to know to make sure you get the best nitro cold brew coffee maker.

What is Nitro Cold Brew?

This question has been on the mind of every beverage enthusiast at one point in their lives. And we’d like to answer it straight away: It’s a cold brew infused with nitrogen and served on tap. That’s pretty much what nitro coffee is, but for cold brew. The primary difference between the two drinks is that cold brewed coffee tends to be very low in acidity and can taste bitter when drunk alone, whereas nitro cold brew has more body, an almost sweet flavor and hardly any negative aftertaste. It’s also less fizzy than kegged beer, even though that might sound like a good thing since you want your cold brew to actually taste like coffee (not fizzy carbonated water), it actually isn’t. The fizz in classic cold brew is a byproduct of the brewing process, so if you taste classic iced coffee and nitro cold brew side by side, you will definitely notice a difference in flavor.

When trying to describe nitro coffee most people will compare its taste to that of Guinness beer – the famous Irish stout with its cascading creamy head and smooth silky texture. We at Lemke know this for a fact because we have served both drinks in our cafés, when enjoying nitro cold brewed coffee from our draft system customers were often reminded of drinking a pint of Guinness. But there are major differences between nitro cold brew and stout: Nitrogen is only one component in the complex flavor profile of Guinness and cold brew is not brewed like a stout. Cold-brewed coffee is steeped (not boiled) and it’s much lower in caffeine than regular hot-brewed coffee, which makes it taste sweeter and milder. The good thing about nitro cold brew is that even though the drink still tastes like coffee, its smoothness doesn’t come at the cost of flavor. All those little nuances that make up the complex world of coffee remain as such, because we use only high-quality Arabica beans for our nitro cold brew, so you can still taste all those amazing notes and aromas – this cannot be said about other commercial offerings.

Can you Make Nitro Cold Brew at Home?

Buy the best nitro cold brew coffee maker to make your life easier. Brewing your own nitro cold brew has never been easier. That’s because we’re here to guide you through the process of turning your favorite coffee into a caffeinated masterpiece that is sure to impress.

When it comes to making any kind of cold-brewed coffee, timing and patience are important factors that cannot be overlooked. While there is no exact science for how long you can steep your coffee, know this: over-steeping will cause your final product (the cold brew) to turn out overly bitter and sometimes even sour — two very undesirable qualities in a cup of joe. As such, it’s always best practice to err on the side of fewer rather than more minutes when steeping the beans. In fact, if you steep for too long, the coffee grounds may begin to take on a “grainy” texture, altering the final taste of your cold brew.

Start by measuring out 32 oz. of filtered water into a pitcher. Then add in 1/3 cup of coarse ground coffee beans. Stir until combined. If you are looking to make multiple batches over time, it is usually best to do so in increments of 16oz water with 1/3 cup of coarse ground beans each time so that you can easily keep track of how much total coffee has been made / used throughout the process.

Put the lid on your pitcher and place it in the fridge overnight (or up to 12+ hours), giving everything plenty of time to infuse. The colder temperature and length of steep time will yield the best results — we promise! After your coffee has reached its ideal strength (again, use patience and err on the side of short for this!), remove the lid and filter out any grounds that may be lingering.

To create a classic version of nitro cold brew, empty 1 bottle (or can) of chilled stout beer into a separate pitcher. Then, slowly pour half as much filtered water as you have stout beer into the mix. Mix it well to avoid making too many bubbles in your final product. Pour your cold brew coffee through a fine mesh strainer , making sure to press down on it with a spoon or spatula to get all those delicious flavors out. Using cheesecloth or paper towels will only cause problems, so avoid using these.

*Note: To get the traditional “nitro” style head on your final product, you must pour it through a special “restaurant” tap system that includes five parts (see image below). If you didn’t already know, this taps systems pushes the cold brew out of its keg via gas pressure, which in turn creates the bubbles you see when pouring. Shoutout to our friends at West Bean Roastery for teaching us how to make nitro if we ever forget!

Once your coffee is fully filtered and ready to go, simply pour it into a glass or mason jar. And voila… You’ve successfully made nitro cold brew coffee at home!

Is Nitro Cold Brew Stronger than Regular Coffee?

There has been a lot of debate in the coffee and caffeine communities about whether or not cold brew coffee is actually more potent than regular brewed. And to that end, there has also been debate about how much stronger nitro cold brew could be compared to regular iced coffee.

I decided to run an experiment and find out for myself if it’s true!

To conduct this test I purchased two samples: one from Starbucks (which only sells the version made with their Clover device) and another from Stumptown Coffee Roasters (Portland). Both versions were served hot and then immediately poured over ice. Ben & Jerry’s Half Baked was used as a chaser for each sample.

For the experiment, I used a stopwatch to try and fairly time the drinking process (no “cheating” with either sample) and utilized Strava on my Android phone to track how much energy it took for me to finish each version.  My starting weight was 182lbs 5’11”. Note: this is not an official study or anything near it, just one enthusiast’s results!

Starbucks test:  The first cup of Starbucks nitro cold brew was fairly light in taste compared with its Stumptown counterpart which had more bitter notes. The caffeine jolt however felt very similar – both samples gave me the same degree of energy that made me feel like skipping down the sidewalk (which is something I would consider to be a “moderate” level of caffeination). The after effects made me feel somewhat lazy but not tired, just less motivated.

Stumptown test:  The flavor for the Stumptown nitro cold brew was much richer and bolder than the Starbucks version. It had more intense coffee notes with hints of chocolate and nuts which provided a stimulating taste that gradually increased in strength until it felt like my tongue was on an adventure tour inside my mouth. This sample gave me an energy jolt so strong I felt nauseous for around 10 minutes before it fully kicked in – this cup was by far the strongest drink I have ever consumed. No doubt about it, this is one of THE most caffeinated drinks on the planet and it’s for this reason alone you should try it. The after effects were very similar to the Starbucks version, just with a stronger “after coffee” taste that made me feel like I had been chewing on burnt rubber.

Conclusion:  To be honest, both samples tasted good and worked well as an energy supplement but in my opinion cold brew tastes best when served hot (even though everyone seems to rave about iced coffee). As far as which drink is stronger … well, there is no clear winner – they are both so fundamentally different in flavor profile that people will have different opinions depending on what mood they’re in or what kind of day they’ve had. In other words, I encourage you to try these and decide for yourself!

Is Nitro Cold Brew Bitter?

The short answer is yes, cold brew coffee is slightly more bitter than hot brewed coffee. But why? Well cold brew and hot brewed differ in a few ways which will cause the difference in bitterness levels:

#1. Quantity of ground beans used – we can be sure that there is no scientific research on this topic because it would be super difficult to quantify how much coffee grounds you should put into your brewer for best taste (i.e., least bitter). As such, I consulted my personal experience as well as some people who tried Nitro Cold Brew and gave me feedback. For those who like their cold brew less sweet/bitter, take note: For every ounce of water you use with our cold brewers, you should add between 1/2 – 3/4 ounces of coffee grounds. As you can see, this ratio varies widely even for the same brewers.

– The reason for this variation is because cold brewers permeate cold water over time rather than force hot water through your grinds quickly to drip out. This slow extraction process allows the natural compounds in the coffee beans to seep into the water over a period of hours, creating a deeper more concentrated flavor. However, it also means that not all parts of the ground are exposed to cold water at one moment in time throughout the process, which causes an overall less bitter taste overall.

#2. Filter Paper: Just like how we mentioned above that there is no research on how much coffee grounds you should use, there will be no research on what filter papers you should use either. That being said, from our personal experience and feedback from some of our customers we have found that a coarse grind using a Chemex Paper Filter works best for a balanced cold brew taste with less bitterness.

#3. Proportion of Coffee to Water: This will be the most important factor in creating a balanced cold brew coffee where the natural flavors of the bean shine through without being too bitter or acidic! We can’t give you an exact amount as everyone has different tastes, but as I mentioned before about 1/2 – 3/4 ounces of coffee grounds per fluid ounce of water is a good rule of thumb to start with. If your cold brew is too dark and bitter for your taste, take note: You can dilute your cold brew with an equal part of water and still achieve a balanced taste (so if you use 2 oz. of coffee grounds, add another 2 oz. of filtered water).

#4. Cold Brewing Time: The longer you let the ground beans sit in the cold water, the more concentrated/less sweet/more bitter your final product will be. You can test this by letting a few ounces of ground coffee stay in a full carafe or brewers overnight vs pulling it after 12-24 hours – do so until much later as I have heard reports from some pull their cold brewed coffee as long as 48 hours! However, keep in mind that the longer you let it set the more your coffee’s natural flavors will be hidden under the bitter taste that comes from using less coffee grounds.

#5. Temperature of Cold Water: The colder the water, the more concentrated/less sweet/more bitter your final product will be because cold brew is brewed with cold water rather than hot (like traditional brewers). You can test this by filling your carafe or brewer with room temperature water vs ice cold – do so until much later to get a stronger concentration of flavor (although keep in mind you’ll lose some of the pleasant flavors like lavender and chocolate if you go too far).

#6. Temp your Cold Brewer Warms To: This one isn’t specifically for Nitro Cold Brew but I figured it would make sense to mention since we’ve seen some people ask about this. If you leave your cold brewer out in room temperature or heat, then your brew is going to be less concentrated/sweeter/bitter than if you refrigerate it. This effect will become more pronounced the longer your cold brewer sits at room temp, so be aware of how long it has been since you took your finished coffee out of the brewers!

FAQs about The Best Nitro Cold Brew Coffee Maker

How Long Does It Last In Cold Brew?

We put our Nitro Cold Brew to the test and decided to leave it out for a while. We generally keep our coffee in a refrigerator, but we wanted to see what would happen if we didn’t with the Nitro version. Would it still be drinkable or taste terrible? We spoke with some of our customers who have tried this same experiment before and they were right – it lasts pretty long!

In fact, after two weeks of not refrigerating the cold brew, it was still delicious. The nitrogen bubbles were still intact even though there wasn’t any ice in the cup! Furthermore, you could still smell that incredible balance between acidic and bitter flavors that you can only find in great cold brew.

So how long does nitro cold brew last? We think it can stay good for about two weeks when you store it unsweetened in your refrigerator.

The best nitro cold brew coffee maker should last for long years, and be repairable if necessary.

How Long Does It Take To Make Cold Brew Coffee?

When it comes down to making great coffee that’s ready to drink, the best way is to make cold brew with a French press . This product will allow you to make at least 2 liters of tasty iced coffee and all you have to do is wait. You’ll need about 16 hours or overnight in order to get this done, but the end result is more than worth it!

With this method, there are no filters involved so you don’t have any of that mess on your hands. You just put all of your ingredients in here, let it steep for 16 hours and then take out the plunger. Any sediment that collects at the bottom of your French press will be pushed to the side so all you have to do is pour it in a cup!

You can drink this Nitro Cold Brew black or add some cream and sugar like any other cold brew. Try using this recipe too – it’s super simple and only has three ingredients!

If you want something that tastes even better than what we’ve mentioned above, then our Cold Brew Coffee Concentrate is for you! This product only takes about 5 minutes to make because all you need are two ingredients. The end result is great since there won’t be any sediment or part getting in your way. You can even add some sugar or cream to this version in order to give it that perfect taste.

Note: Even the best nitro cold brew coffee maker need to be looked after properly, just like other expensive coffee makeres.

Does nitro cold brew need to be refrigerated?

The short answer is no. Nitro cold brew coffee doesn’t need to be refrigerated after it’s been opened, as long as it stays sealed and out of direct sunlight. The nitrogen infused into the liquid is what stabilizes the cold brew and keeps it fresh for longer periods of time.

Nitrogen infusion works by displacing some or all of the gasses that were originally dissolved in the liquid (typically CO2). Because those gasses are more soluble than N2, you can think of them as being ‘pushed out’ when they dissolve an equal volume of N2 instead. That’s why we see a creamy head on top and also why people love to do ‘nitro face’ challenges: because you’re essentially inhaling pure nitrogen gas.

Nitrogen is also released when the bottle is opened, so the tension in the head space decreases and that’s why you see bubbles coming out of your faucet.

One thing to take into consideration with cold brew, specifically nitro cold brew, is that it can develop a slight yeasty flavor if not consumed within its shelf life. This tends to happen around 2-3 weeks depending on storage conditions (too hot or too humid for example). Cold brew coffee has no preservatives, so it will eventually spoil after time due to natural processes like oxidation or microorganism growth over time.

Our Nitro Carton recommends drinking within 7 days of opening for best taste experience. We recommend storing bottles in a cool and dry location, like the pantry or in your refrigerator. Once opened we also recommend drinking within 24 hours to ensure optimal freshness.

How Does Nitrogen Cold Brew Coffee Make A Difference?

Nitrogen cold brew has become popular because of its smooth, less acidic taste and its creamier texture compared to regular cold brew coffee. What’s the science behind these two things?

Well, for starters, nitrogen is less soluble in cold water than in hot water – which means that when you add it to your cold-brewed coffee, it doesn’t release all of its gas right away like carbon dioxide does. Instead, the nitrogen forms tiny little bubbles – much smaller than those released by CO2 – with trapped pockets of air inside . These make the ice cubes float instead of sinking to the bottom of your glass (which means that you get more visible creaminess with each sip), and they give your iced coffee a unique texture that makes drinking it feel more like sipping on a beer or an ale. The same thing happens when you’re cooking pasta, which is why you have to be careful not to over-cook it.

Nitrogen cold brew coffee makers work by passing pressurized, purified nitrogen through a hefty dose of coffee grounds sealed in a container . The gas seeps into the beans and extracts all the flavor compounds from them – including caffeine – along with fatty acids that add smoothness and body to your  finished product! As the nitrogen bubbles rise, they push out any air still left trapped in your beans before pushing out a richly flavored blend that’s ready to drink right away .

The only downside of this whole process is that it doesn’t allow for much control on your end. You can’t adjust how much or little caffeine is in your final cup because there just isn’t enough time for that to happen. You also can’t adjust how much or little sweetness, bitterness or acidity you’re getting in each cup because the extraction process is over before those flavors can develop…
