8 Most Common Microwave Problems & How You Can Fix Them

We’ve all been there when our microwave somehow starts to operate improperly. The situation is annoying, yet, we knew nothing about microwaves’ issues. And we bet you’re here because you’re in the same position as we were.

Lucky for you: we drew our lesson and came up with a list of the 8 most common microwave problems & how you can fix them

The Most Common Microwave Problem: You Cannot Turn On Your Microwave

There are a few possibilities when you fail to turn on your microwave. However, the good news is this is a simple fix.

Reason 1: Unplugged microwaves

First, make sure you have your microwave plugged. If yes, it is advisable to unplug the microwave, check the output, and then reconnect. When inspecting the cables, look for exposed, broken, or damaged signs. If your display screen is now on, then you’re done. If not, move to the second solution.

Reason 2: Tripped circuit breakers

The second factor to consider is the circuit breaker. If there is still no power after unplugging and reconnecting the microwave, go to the circuit breaker and examine potential popped ones.

A popped circuit breaker indicates that the circuit has been switched to its optical position because of power overflow. All manufacturers have to include this safety system in their products.

To identify a tripped circuit breaker, go to the circuit breaker location and see if one has been turned off. If you spot a popped one, examine the power blueprint next to the circuit breaker.

If the number next to the circuit breaker represents a microwave or kitchen, it may be your problem. A tripped circuit breaker is a symptom of a more significant issue, and we will cover it later in this section.

Reason 3: Stuck hinges and doors

If you don’t see any issue regarding the outlet or circuit breaker, check the hinges and doors. Is there any leftover food or other items on the door or door hinge? Can the microwave oven lid quickly latch in the microwave frame? Clean the microwave oven door, door hinges, and door joints.

To test for several possible solutions, put a cup in the microwave and cook for 1 minute. If the water is hot, then you’re good to go.

Your Microwave’s Keypad Buttons Are Not (or Partially) Working

If you notice any problem regarding your functional buttons’ performance, you’d better solve the issue immediately. At first, it might seem like only a few buttons get broken, but the defection would spread to all.

There are two reasons why you encounter keypad issues. Solution about microwave problems & how you can fix them.

Reason 1: Dirty buttons

First of all, the keyboard might be too dirty. Food or other external debris might get into and block the microwave buttons.

To solve this problem, clean your microwave keyboard with a warm soapy mixture. Make sure the solution is non-abrasive. Also, clean gently with a cloth. Moreover, ensure that you unplug your microwave before cleaning the keypad for extra safety.

Reason 2: A loose connection between the control board and keyboards

Another problem is that the connection between the keyboard and the control panel is loose, and you need to reconnect them. Like many microwave brands, the interface between the keyboard and control panel is a small, narrow strip that is insecure. This problem might come from abrasive users’ pressing, pushing, or pulling the microwave door handle.

Before you begin, unplug your microwave from the power outlet. Since it is an electrical component, there is a risk of electric shock. Unplug the power cord to avoid getting shocked.

To fix this, you need to re-establish the connection with the keyboard. The procedure depends on the manufacturer, type, and location of the microwave. However, you must remove the vents, door hinges, and keypad.

After removing the parts above, you’ll notice a few extra wires and a connector. This connector is what you’re searching for. It looks like a thin strip of tape called filament tape. Most of the time, there is a bracket holding this tape in place. Now, all you have to do is lift this bracket, remove the connector, and reinsert it.

Reinstall the unscrewed parts and connect the keyboard to the microwave again. Then, reconnect the microwave to the electrical outlet and test the keyboard. If the button operates well, then you’re good to go. If not, try to disconnect the keyboard and insert the connector even deeper.

Your Microwave Fails To Cook Food

If you notice your cooking speed is longer than usual, or your microwave fails to cook food, then the reasons could be as follows.

Higher chances are that there is something wrong with one of these 8 microwave parts. Before getting a professional, check to see if leaving space between the dishes improves cooking time. Typically, the time would be longer if you cook a large batch of food.

If the above tip doesn’t work, it means one of these parts gets broken:

  • Diode
  • Door switch
  • Magnetron
  • High voltage capacitor
  • High voltage transformer
  • Thermal fuse
  • Thermo protector
  • Main control board

For your safety, please do not handle these components on your own. Only professionals can solve these problems.

Your Microwave Sparks/Arcs While Working

If you witness any arcs or sparks while your microwave is cooking, you might want to check these instructions.

Microwave problems & how you can fix them

Reason 1: Dirty microwave

Believe it or not, dust can accumulate on captivity walls, microwave doors, or recessed holes. As a result, it causes arcs. Thus, to prevent this situation, clean the microwave at least once a week.

Reason 2: Problemed high voltage transformer

When the high voltage transformer operates incorrectly, arcing and burning smell can occur.

Reason 3: Aluminum or other metals uses.

Using aluminum in your microwave is controversial. However, feel free to use aluminum in your microwave if you don’t witness any arcs.

When using aluminum in a microwave, it is best to use only a napkin to cover it up. Also, do not use metal in the microwave as these materials WILL result in arcs. In this case, you’d better find another cookware with different materials.

Reason 4: Broken waveguide cover

Take this cover out and search for any damages. Also, try microwaving a glass of water. If no arcing occurs, replace the old cover with a new one.

Reason 5: Chipped paint

Chipped paint is also a determining factor resulting in arcs and sparks in the microwave. Examine your microwave for fallen or chipped paint and remove them.

Reason 6: Problem racks

The rack-mount can also suffer from a few different problems. First, make sure the rack does not touch any objects inside the microwave. Second, ensure there is no debris on the metal frame.

Microwave Problems & How You Can Fix Them: Your Turntable Does Not Spin

Most of the time, the turntable spins while you use your microwave. However, if it doesn’t, you might want to take a closer look.

First, inspect your microwave to see if anything blocks the turntable ring. Second, make sure the glass table is in the correct position. Then, ensure that you’ve turned on the turntable. Finally, if these parts all work as expected but the turntable still doesn’t spin, you might need to fix or replace the turntable motor.

Microwave Problems & How You Can Fix Them: Your Microwave Smells After Cooking

Yes, all microwaves smell after cooking. But if the smell doesn’t go away soon or is like the meal from last month, you might need to search for a solution.

There are two solutions to this problem. First, give your microwave a clean with a warm soapy diluted solution and check the result. If cleaning the microwave does not help, consider replacing the filter.

The cause of smoking could vary. It could either be because of arcing, vacancy, or a broken high voltage transformer. Sometimes, the smoke comes from an internal part of the microwave. Thus, we suggest unplugging your product and call for a professional.

Microwave Problems & How You Can Fix Them: Your Microwave Is Too Loud

A noisy microwave is a real problem. Not only is it irritating, but it could also be a sign of defection.

The cause of a noisy microwave can either be from its magnetron, heating motor, mixing system, or turntable. Furthermore, it will be necessary to replace the magnetron if you hear a sound or a loud noise. Consult a professional before attempting to replace a magnetron.

In addition to noise, the turntable might be the defection, especially when you witness a slower rotating speed or, in the worst case, when it does not spin at all. If the noise is like grinding, check your mixing system and your heat exchanger.

Conclusion

We understand how irritating it is to have a problemed microwave. If you’re in the same situation, try some of our suggestions above to identify your microwave problems & how you can fix them. We wish you luck!
